Ceramist Ko Gyung-won will open her exhibition, ¡°Relax and Comfortable,¡± at Space Hyang in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul, on Thursday.
For her first-ever solo exhibition, she created 34 chairs that display unusual colors and figures that seem to have just been excavated from the ocean.
¡°My works have always focused on reproducing natural coziness and warmth, what humans want to enjoy in general, in the form of comfortable and beautiful chairs, tables and boxes. For my first exhibition I gathered the works I have worked on under the theme ¡®Relax and Comfortable¡¯ before and after I started attending graduate school,¡± said Ko.

Ko is a late bloomer ¡ª she majored in natural sciences at Dongguk University and worked as a researcher at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology for several years but dramatically shifted her career to ceramic arts 12 years ago, unable to let go of her artistic passions.
After receiving lessons for eight years, she is currently attending the Graduate School of Dan Kook University, specializing in ceramics. Despite her late start, she has received several awards, including two Special Awards and one Appreciation Award from The Gwanak Grand Modern Art Exhibition.
This exhibition is jointly prepared by her and her students at Gyung-won Ceramic Studio which she opened in 2008. Eighteen amateur artists, ranging from 23-year-old college students to 60-year-old dentists, each exhibit two works that have their own themes. One third of the exhibition space is dedicated to the students¡¯ works.
¡°Teachers are usually reluctant to hold shows together with their students. When I was a student, I always thought it would be a great opportunity for the students to create more complete works if they could participate in an exhibition with their teacher and decided I would do that if I ever became a teacher. I am planning on continuing this type of exhibition every year,¡± said Ko.
The exhibition runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1 at Space Hyang in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul. For more information, call (010) 9251-4393.
